The Cabildo of Tenerife, through its Environmental agents, successfully identified the owner of a drone that was operated on 29 June in a protected location without the necessary authorisation, resulting in a fire outbreak in the municipality of Buenavista del Norte, situated within the designated area of the Teno Rural Park.
Investigations by the agents revealed that the fire was ignited by a drone that had crashed into the rocks, setting fire to the extremely dry vegetation. Thankfully, swift action by the response teams prevented the situation from escalating into a full-blown fire.
The incident occurred in the vicinity of Ladera del Morro (Roque Tarucho), located in Masca, an area with challenging access that necessitated aerial support during a time when a pre-alert warning was in place due to the heightened risk of forest fires.
A Brifor helicopter, alongside personnel from the Canarian Police, Civil Guard, Local Police of Buenavista del Norte, Volunteer Firefighters, Emergency and Rescue Group, as well as nine professionals from the regional Fire Extinguishing Service, were deployed to the scene. Their prompt action was crucial in containing the fire in a particularly difficult terrain.
The Environmental agents undertook the investigation, successfully locating the owner of the drone, who now faces a disciplinary procedure for violating regulations prohibiting flights in such areas without prior authorisation from the governing bodies of the Cabildo de Tenerife.
The insular director of the Natural Environment, Pedro Millán, indicated that they have intensified monitoring of infractions within natural spaces. This effort involves the body of Environmental agents from the Cabildo, who are collaborating with the Civil Guard, the Canarian Police, and the Local Police. “We are engaged in ongoing work across various areas of environmental protection and conservation in Tenerife, and the investigation and resolution of this case exemplifies our efforts,” he stated.
