From January to June 2024, there has been a significant transformation in the night-time scenery of La Laguna, thanks to the installation of 1,085 cutting-edge LED lights at strategic locations in San Benito, La Cuesta, Barrio Nuevo, Villa Hilaria, La Rúa, Finca España, Chinamada, and El Batán. “The implementation of this technology will enable more efficient control over lighting, leading to reduced energy consumption, while also enhancing road and pedestrian safety in these areas. This important initiative will also play a key role in lowering CO2 emissions, supporting our commitment to the fight against climate change in La Laguna,” emphasised Fran Hernández, the Councillor for Municipal Services.
Simultaneously, there has been a renewal of wiring and electrical panels, deemed essential to ensure the longevity of the service and to decrease electricity supply issues, “another pivotal aspect that we are prioritising to prevent the necessity of future repairs.”
Over the past six months, more than 150 new lighting structures of various types and heights have been set up, including columns, poles, and posts, designed to withstand the specific environmental factors of each location. “All these upgrades were imperative due to the ageing and deterioration of the previous infrastructures, impacted by issues such as corrosion, physical damage, weather conditions, and the passage of time itself,” stated the local official. According to him, “installing advanced and highly efficient LED lighting is futile if the supporting structures and additional infrastructures are not in optimal condition. These enhancements – he added – are crucial to ensure the service’s quality.”
