The City Council of Tenerife has implemented a ban on smoking in natural spots across the island due to the soaring temperatures and the threat of wildfires as announced by the president of the island’s governing body, Rosa Dávila.
Dávila, through social media, highlighted that this is the first instance of such a smoking prohibition being enforced, encompassing footpaths, lookouts, forest trails, recreational regions, and camping sites.
“Ninety percent of fires are triggered by human actions and discarded cigarette butts pose a significant threat,” stated the island’s president.
She urged citizens to provide utmost cooperation while the alert status remains active.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has activated a yellow alert in the Canary Islands this weekend due to the risk of temperatures reaching up to 36 degrees, whereas the Canary Islands Government has declared a wildfire alert across all islands barring Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
